Yep.. right there with you. I was always an MLB 2k guy growing up and there are definitely still aspects of those games that still are superior to what they use in the show – IMO, namely gesture pitching, no buttons for hitting, and the fielding, were throwing and user input was actually difficult with low arm accuracy ratings. And stronger armed fielders had their “green meter” more to the right instead of the show which just has everybody’s green right in the middle. Man those had to be the golden days. I can’t imagine how dope having a ps2 be “the thing” during my college days would have been. Couple guys last year brought theirs up and we played a college baseball game (Go CS Fullerton lol) and we play the arcade hitting mode on MVP during pregame sometimes. The infield isn’t too bad although I gave up a bunt double as a 3B because I just kept running back and forth over the ball.
I learned the only way I could honestly keep a consistent focus on the show was to pick a really crappy team as a franchise and just be as meticulous as possible with part of the organization from A all the way up to the majors. Take it as slow as possible. We played it with baseball cards, carefully making teams, and then doing play by play as we rolled the dice. We would make all-star teams, either al versus NL or east or west of the Mississippi. It sounds silly now but to 11 years old me if the dice said that it was a pop-up or a ground ball it really mattered to me that Thurman Munson or Bucky Dent caught it. Actually they can fly pretty well. When I was in Tennessee as an exchange student for a year, I was surprised by the team spirit of each High School. Like how there was a football game every Friday night and almost all of the school was there to cheer them on. That would never happen in my country.
