First, the Antifa is not an organization. It does not have a leader, membership roles, or any defined, centralized structure. There is no domestic terrorism law, despite periodic proposals to create one. President Donald J. Trump has repeatedly said that hatred and violence have no place in America. Our country must unite in condemning violence and recognize that the bonds of love and loyalty that bring us together are stronger than the wicked forces trying to divide us. Although Federal law provides a mechanism to designate and sanction foreign terrorist organizations and foreign state sponsors of If YOU Ain’t Wit US, WE Ain’t Wit Y’ALL Shirt terrorism, there is currently no analogous mechanism for formally designating domestic terrorist organizations.
Nonetheless, law enforcement has many tools at its disposal to address violent individuals and groups. The Department of Justice routinely charges violent individuals, of all types, with a variety of offenses, including arson, threats, fraud, tax violations, hate crimes, murder, and offenses related to the misuse or illegal possession of firearms and explosives. It’s actually doing really shitty and the fundamentals make no sense according to MarketWatch. If he wanted to designate actual groups carrying out violence as terrorist groups, he would have to designate groups like the Proud Boys and other pro-Trump groups as terrorists. The difference is that even though the If YOU Ain’t Wit US, WE Ain’t Wit Y’ALL Shirt Proud Boys and other violent pro-Trump groups adhere to the ideologies of white supremacy, fascism, and MAGA, they are specific groups that engage in violence, with leaders, hierarchies, websites selling merch, etc. Not just some vaguely defined ideology.
